Here’s a fascinating near set of the popular 1962 Post Cereal Football issue, found here in its rarest form of complete or partial panels, easing some of the concerns typically attributed to relying on the scissoring skills of an earlier generation of American youth. With such a pedigree comes great cachet, especially with most of the larger or complete panels that are reasonably cut well outside the card image surfaces. Even with the smaller panels of five, four or three cards, the cutting is well done and rarely intrudes on card edges. There is some overall subtle aging wear, but only enough to nudge the presentation rather than dictate a lower technical grade. No. 61 Jim Brown is the only notable Hall of Famer among the missing numbers; most of the other missing cards come from the subset of Shortprints. Given the format of panels, there are a total of 263 cards included in the near set, with some obvious duplication, even among Hall of Famers. Overall, there are 17 panels of seven cards (some wear to advertising panels with a couple clipped), 12 with six (10 are complete), six with five cards (all are complete), eight with four cards (complete) and five with just three (complete). Breakdown of keys by panels: Seven-Card Panels: 1) Taylor, Lane and Johnson, 2) Taylor and Lane, 3) Unitas, Renfro and Lipscomb, 4) Ringo, Parker and Wilson, 5) Donovan and Lipscomb, 6) Huff, 7) Marchetti and Jordan, 8) Gregg and Donovan, 9) Lilly and Jordan, 10) Berry and Huff, 11) McCormack, Meredith and Parker, 12) McDonald and McElhenny, and 13) Lilly; Six-Card Panels: 1) Hornung and Meredith, 2) Starr and Karras, 3) Roosevelt Brown and Gregg, 4) McElhenny and Johnson, 5) Jurgensen and Renfro, 6) Bednarik and Lary, 7) Layne and Gregg, 8) Tarkenton and Jones, 9) Moore and Jordan, 10) Bednarik, Karras, Matson and Roosevelt Brown; Five-Card Panels: 1) Robustelli and Berry, 2) Moore, Lane and Mitchell, and 3) Berry and Robustelli; Four-Card Panels: 1) Ditka, 2) St. Clair, 3) Schmidt, 4) Wilson, 5) Lary, and 6) McCormack; and Three-Card Panels: 1) Kramer and 2) St. Clair. The missing numbers (26): No. 10, 19, 22, 24, 27, 41, 42, 43, 48, 61 Brown, 62, 66, 78, 92, 117, 119, 120,133, 135, 136,153, 155, 164, 169, 190 and 192. Even with a couple of dozen missing cards, finding so much of a complete set in such a unique, pristine condition because of the uncut panels presents a rare and compelling opportunity for serious collectors.
