This is an amazing hoard of one of the most unusual card sets from the 1970s, the oversized 4 ¾-by-6 ¼-inch Sportscaster cards that have an international flavor that fits in nicely with it unique array of sports. The full set, with more than 2,000 subjects, includes sports as diverse as rugby, lawn bowling, fencing, karate, biking, skiing, bullfighting, mountain climbing and many more, but this high-grade grouping is confined to baseball, track and field, football, boxing and basketball. The cards, distributed through mail-in offers of two dozen cards per, include a near-set of the baseball section (109/140), and robust groups from track and field (120) and football (89). There is some modest duplication in the array, but several of the players with multiple examples have two versions. Here’s a breakdown of some keys: Baseball (109) – Aaron, Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Mantle & Maris (2), Rose, Bench (5), Carew, Yastrzemski, Seaver, Brett, Koufax and Spahn, plus team cards of the 1927 Yankees and 1969 Mets; Track and Field (120) – Beamon (2), Comaneci, Bannister, Fosbury (2), Nehemiah, Brummel, Boston, Jenner (2) and Hayes; Football (89) – Brown (2), Unitas (2), Sayers (2), Staubach, Harris, Namath (2) and Simpson; Boxing (29) – Marciano, Frazier, Graziano and Foreman; and Basketball (11) – Erving, Abdul Jabbar, Robertson, Havlicek and Maravich.
