Here is a simply stunning artifact from one of the beloved players in postwar Detroit Tigers history, the slugging outfielder and designated hitter Willie Horton, who planted a silver Sharpie autograph atop his “2” of his No. 23 on this remarkable home jersey. With the fabled Olde English “D” on the front in navy-blue tackle twill and the pinstriping around the collar and down the front, the shirt has the appropriate Wilson Size 48 label at the collar and “75 Set 1” embroidered in navy-blue on a flap tag on the front tail. Speaking of the tail, most all of it has been removed with scissors by Willie himself, as was his custom. His name appears across the shoulder on the back in navy-blue tackle twill affixed directly to the shirt and shows a bit of wear and light fraying; the No. 2 on the back hosting the Beckett Authenticated signature has some tearing at the bottom. As noted, Horton is a revered figure in modern Tigers lore, a member of the legendary 1968 World Championship squad that rallied a whole city and state amid one of the darkest times of political and social upheaval. In a storied, 18-year career with six teams but most notably the Tigers, the four-time All-Star socked 325 home runs and added 1,163 RBI to go with a .273 lifetime average.
